Yin Yoga vs. Restorative Yoga: What’s the Difference, And Which One Do You need?

You’re looking at your Studio’s class schedule and you see Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga on offer but you aren’t quite sure how they differ. You aren’t alone! From the outside looking in, it might appear that they’re similar practices as they are both slow, mindful practices that involve holding poses for an extended period of time. They both offer a welcome alternative to the high-intensity movement you might find in other class types, and an opportunity to balance your movement practice by aiding recovery.

However, the intention behind each practice is quite different. Being able to understand the difference can help you choose exactly what your body needs on any given day.

At Mysa Studio, we believe just as strongly in offering calm, restorative and nurturing classes alongside out dynamic ones. Balance and variety is at the heart of everything we do and that includes the kind of movement you choose to show up for.

Why Slow Movement Matters

Knowing when to slow down doesn’t always come naturally, and more often than not, it’s something we learn how to do through trial and error. Dynamic movement that raises your heart rate and helps you build strength is important, but rest, intentional and mindful movement is equally so. It can be powerful to know when your body needs rest, and how best to fulfil that need.

Needing rest isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of self-awareness which is something we always take time to celebrate at Mysa Studio.

So, if you need to; sigh it out in class, take a pause or simply acknowledge that your nervous system needs something gentler at the moment.

Yin Yoga: Journey Into The Body

Yin Yoga is a slow, steady practice that targets the deeper layers of the body and nervous system. Specifically, the fascia and connective tissue. Unlike more dynamic styles of Yoga that work primarily with the muscles, Yin Yoga works with the parts of the body that connect and support internal organs, joints and tissues.

By holding poses for any extended period of time, typically anywhere between three and seven minutes, Yin Yoga creates space for deep tension, tightness and stiffness to realise and melt away. It also works with the body’s meridian channels, supporting the flow of energy in ways that complement both physical and emotional well-being.

The thing that makes Yin Yoga challenging isn’t always the pose itself, it’s the length of the hold, the tension already present in the body and the invitation to keep the mind focused and present throughout, even when discomfort is present. It can be difficult to observe the sensations that arise without becoming distracted.

The Key Things to Know About Yin Yoga:

→ Slow, steady and grounding
→ Targets fascia and connective tissue rather than muscles
→ Poses are held for several minutes at a time
→ No warm-up required
→ A beautiful way to balance Yang-based practices that are more dynamic.
→ Where Yang is heating and activating, Yin is cooling and calming

Restorative Yoga: A Nervous System Reset

Restorative Yoga takes a different approach. Yin asks you to stay present, attentive and patient. Restorative Yoga asks you to completely surrender and let go.

The intention is a full nervous system shutdown and recovery. All poses are fully supported with props; bolsters, blankets, blocks and sandbags. This is so the body can release without any muscular tension. The goal is minimal activation with maximum support so you can leave feeling as deeply rested as possible.

When the body feels fully held and all effort removed, our nervous systems begin to shift out of a stress response and into a state of calm.

As the body slows down, the mind will follow. This is the power of a Restorative Yoga practice. It’s not just about feeling relaxed, it’s about creating the perfect conditions for deep rest and recovery.

The poses in a Restorative Yoga practice are typically held from anywhere between three to ten minutes, making it one of the most profoundly cooling and calming forms of movement available to us.

Restorative Yoga is especially beneficial if you:

→ Lead a busy or high-stress lifestyle
→ Find it difficult to switch off
→ Are pre or post-partum
→ Are managing an injury or recovery from surgery
→ Are dealing with lack of sleep
→ Simply need to rest

And the best part? No warm-up or prior experience is needed!

So, which one do you need?

The truth is you’re going to need both at different times and for different reasons.

At Mysa Studio we like to think of it this way: if you want to realise deep physical tension, work with your body’s energy channels and challenge yourself to stay present in stillness, Yin Yoga is your practice.

If you need an opportunity to fully switch off, support your nervous system and give your body permission to do absolutely nothing, Restorative Yoga might be the practice that is calling to you.

Mysa Studio’s schedule is designed to give you both. Whether you’re feeling energised or exhausted, strong or recovering, there is always something to meet you where you are.
