How many times have you found yourself talking about the cold this week? If you’re in Perth, probably more than a few! Winter has arrived, and with it an unseasonably cold front that has us all shivering in the morning, and racing to turn our electric blankets on in the evening.
We’re pretty lucky in Perth, for the most part it’s blue sky days and once the sun is on you, the cold doesn’t linger for too long, but this time of the year has a reputation for bringing something other than the cold along with it; coughs, colds, sore throats and that general feeling of being slightly run-down.
At Mysa Studio in Manning, South Perth we believe that year-round wellness is essential for building a sustainable foundation for health.
It’s not just about movement, it’s about every choice we make outside the studio too. How we rest, sleep, eat, work and of course, how we play. All of it contributes to our overall health and wellbeing and this time of year always asks a little more of us than Spring, Summer and Autumn.
The good news? Ayurvedic wisdom has been helping people navigate immunity support for thousands of years and a lot of it is surprisingly simple.
Why Winter Is Hard On The Body
Winter in Perth can be unpredictable and the variability can have a real effect on the body.
The shift of the seasons can leave us feeling unsettled both mentally and physically while our nervous system, digestion and sleep all have to work harder to keep pace with the demands of the colder environment.
Add dry air from indoor heating, and the snap change in temperature when you move from indoors to outdoors, our immune systems come under genuine pressure.
In Ayurveda, this time of year is understood through the qualities of Vata; the energy of air and movement. When Vata becomes aggravated by cold, dryness and unpredictability, we become more vulnerable to illness, anxiety, poor sleep and fatigue.
The antidote? Warmth, routine and nourishment.
Simple Ways To Support Your Immunity This Winter
The best tools when it comes to supporting your immunity are often intuitive and simple. You’re probably already doing some of them without even realising.
→ Wearing warmer layers
→ Eating warm, heartier meals
→ A hot drink at the end of the day
These are all great ways to support your health as you move with the rhythm of the season.
Here are some more practical ways to support your system this Winter:
→ Warm up your food/drinks
Cold and raw foods are harder for the body to process in Winter. Favour warm, cooked, nourishing meals like soups, dahls, slow-cooked dishes and warming spices like ginger, turmeric and cinnamon. These stoke what Ayurveda calls the digestive fire, which is central to overall immunity.
→ Prioritise sleep and rest
Sleep is one of the most powerful immune boosters available to us, and it’s free. Winter naturally invites us to slow down and rest more. Honour that. Aim to be in bed earlier, reduce screen time in the evenings and create a gentle wind-down ritual that signals to your nervous system that it’s time to power down and rest.
→ Keep warm and protect the throat
In Ayurveda, the throat is considered a key site of vulnerability during Winter. A simple scarf, warm drinks throughout the day and avoiding cold beverages can make a meaningful difference. A warm turmeric and salt gargle is a traditional remedy worth keeping in your toolkit, you never know when you’ll need it!
→ Support gut health
Gut health and the immune system are deeply connected. Fermented foods, warming spices and regular, consistent mealtimes all support healthy digestion, which in turn supports immunity.
→ Manage your nervous system
Burnout, anxiety and chronic stress all suppress immune function. Movement, breathwork, rest and community are not luxuries, they are part of what keeps us well. This is something we take seriously at Mysa, and it’s at the heart of everything we offer.
→ Spend time in the Winter sun
Perth winters are kind enough to give us sunshine most days, use it. Even a short walk outside during daylight hours supports Vitamin D levels, lifts mood and helps regulate the body’s natural rhythms.
