January Yoga Theme: Resistance vs. Freedom

Yoga Instructor Perth Manning Pilates

– Making space for meaningful change in 2026

We made it! A new year, a fresh chapter and with it a familiar mix of emotions.

Motivation, hope, uncertainty, maybe even a little stagnation.

The beginning of a new year often comes with a sense of freedom. Permission to pause, start over or just take a break from routine and the familiar.

This opportunity to rest and reset ends as quickly as it arrives. Resistance creeps back in and old habits return. We start to tell ourselves familiar stories and the uncertainty of what lies ahead can quietly pull us back into patterns that no longer serve us.

At Mysa Studio we see this time of year as an invitation to look inward. Change doesn’t happen by force, but by awareness, understanding and compassion. Before we can take those crucial steps forward we must first hold space for where we are right now.

This month we invite you to take a moment at the start of each class to arrive in your body, settle into the space and notice your thoughts and feelings. Reflection creates clarity and awareness creates choice.

Through the resistance on the mat we find freedom in the body while our Yoga practice offers us a powerful space to explore this dynamic together or separately, through conscious movement, breath and stillness. Let your habitual patterns surface, observe them without judgement and notice how resistance shows up for you, physically, mentally emotionally and how it begins to shift when you take a moment to stay present with it.

Keep this well-known Yoga saying in the back of your mind during this months practice:

How we show up on the mat is often how we show up in life.

This month you are invited to notice:

→ Where resistance appears in your practice
→ Where you find a sense of release or freedom
→ What happens in your mind, breath and body as you move from one sense to the next

Resistance might show up as tight hamstrings, fatigue or an internal dialog that encourages you to skip class. How often do these sensations soften once you begin moving in spite of the desire not to? How quickly does stagnant energy shift when you choose to show up anyway?

A feeling of freedom won’t always come from avoiding resistance, it will often come through when you choose to meet it, and when you choose to meet yourself where you are in that moment.

Why we need both:

Resistance and freedom are not opposites, in fact, they depend on each other. We need to feel restriction in order to fully understand release. Just as we use resistance bands to build strength and stability. These moments in our practice can support our growth, help us to see things more clearly, and build resilience.

This is where your Yoga practice will start to move beyond exercise. It becomes a practice of awareness as we move our body, breath and mind as one. When taking your practice off the mat, consider where resistance and freedom are showing up in your life. Start small, reflect often.

January isn’t about pushing harder or setting rigid goals for yourself. It’s about learning to recognise when to soften, when to stay and when to let go.
